Interlibrary Loan Service

Interlibrary Loan Service

Looking for something but can't find it in our library? Our Interlibrary Loan Service may be able to borrow the item from another library. Any registered member of Barrie Public Library in good standing may use this service.

For a new title (published within the last year) you may ask that we consider purchasing the title for our collection. Please submit your request through our online form.

What Is Interlibrary Loan?

Any borrowed book or item that comes from another library outside of the Barrie Public Library system is considered an interlibrary loan. Patrons must check the Barrie Public Library's catalogue first to determine if the item is available from our collection prior to making an interlibrary loan request to borrow from other libraries.

How Much Does It Cost?

We offer basic Interlibrary Loan service free of charge, however some specialized libraries and many university libraries charge a lending fee that will be passed on to the borrower. Photocopied articles can also involve charges. When you make your request you can indicate how much you would be willing to pay if a charge is made by the lending library.

How Do I Request an Interlibrary Loan?

Public Services staff will take your requests in person, over the telephone or you may submit your request through our online form. Please have the title, author's name and your library card number ready. Alternately, you can use patron Self-Serve Interlibrary Loan to place your request yourself at your convenience. Read the User Guide to help learn the system.

How Can I Sign Up for the Self-Serve Interlibrary Loan System?

The Self-Serve Interlibrary Loan system belongs to INFO, the provincial Interlibrary Loan network that the Barrie Public Library belongs to. Library users must first possess a valid library card and have an Interlibrary Loan patron record created in the INFO system by our staff. To register, submit your full name, address, home phone number and library card number through our online form.

How Long Does It Take to Fulfill an Interlibrary Loan Request?

Service will be provided as quickly as possible, however waiting times vary depending on the lending library and the materials requested. Two weeks is an average waiting time. Patron notification by telephone or email takes place once the item has been received by the library and is at the pickup location specified. Prompt pick-up ensures that you will have the maximum borrowing time.

How Can I Monitor the Progress of My Request?

For Self-Serve Interlibrary Loan users, you can view the status of your request by looking at "My Requests" on the side-bar of of the page to see when it has been processed, shipped, and received. You can also observe if your interlibrary loan request has been cancelled because the item is located in the Barrie Public Library already, or the policies of the lending library prohibit lending. If there is any problem with your request, library staff will contact you. Please do not resubmit your request.

How Can I Renew an Interlibrary Loaned Item?

You can not make a renewal on the Self-Serve Interlibrary Loan system. You must contact library staff several days before the due date of the item to request a renewal of the loan period. Contact our Public Services Staff through our online form.
