We are super excited to announce that we're having an all ages Comic Book Convention (otherwise known as a Comic Con) on Saturday, October 15! Comic Cons celebrate comic books and the music and movies inspired by them. Come dressed in your favourite superhero or comic character costume! Free, all-ages.

Barrie Public Library is excited to participate in Outside the Lines from September 11-17, a weeklong celebration demonstrating the creativity and innovation happening in libraries.

We're inviting local schools to participate in this event through a Twitter photo challenge! The winning class will win a private Tinker Lab session and pizza lunch at the library.

If you haven't come to check out our Tinker Lab yet, what are you waiting for!? 

Right inside the front doors at our Downtown branch, you'll find a place of discovery, creativity and imagination. Watch the 3D printer create something neat, play with the Ozo Bots, Dash robots or Meccano. Create something on the sewing machine, or take the K'NEX roller coaster for a ride! It's all about learning and experiencing new things in a hands-on environment. All ages are welcome, as there is something for everyone.

We're excited to announce that we're a part of the TackleShare Program, giving new and young anglers the opportunity to go fishing at no cost!

Visit the Downtown branch (60 Worsley St.) to sign out a rod and reel and an assortment of tackle the same way you would borrow library books. It's a great way to get some time in the outdoors while learning a new skill. Head down to the beach or dock and enjoy some quality time with your family! 

Fishing gear will be available throughout the summer.

Science Odyssey: Ten Days of Discovery & Innovation is a collaborative event happening May 6 - 15th.  This event is a celebration of science led by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.  For more information, visit their website Science.gc.ca.  The library is offering a STEAM storytime for ages 3 years and older on Saturday May 7th Downtown at 2:30 p.m. as part of this celebration.

We've got lots on tap this weekend! Barrie Winterfest is taking place on February 6, and 7 and we're getting in on the fun at the Downtown branch of the library.

Free Snowman Kit with New Kid's Membership
Saturday and Sunday during library hours
Drop in any time this weekend to sign your kids up for a library card, and take home a snowman kit! These great kits have all you need to decorate your snowman - felt hat and scarf, orange nose and buttons! Free with all new kids memberships. We may not have much snow yet, but it's coming!

Let’s get ready to rumble! We’ve got an exciting interactive display coming to the Library this holiday break – the Prodomax Robot Rumble!

On December 28th and 30th we’ll have an interactive display set up for kids to watch and play with SumoBots - small robots designed to ‘wrestle’ each other in a mini-sumo ring. They’re designed from scratch and some parts are even made with a 3D printer!

Registration is now open for Lego Robotics Winter 2016.  Click here https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BLVTDZC to register The program runs on Saturdays January 9 - February 6.  The 6-9 year group runs at Painswick from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. and the 9-12 year group runs at Downtown from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m..

All registered storytimes begin the week of January 26th and go to the week of March 2nd.

Toddler Time:
30 minutes of songs, stories and activities for parents and caregivers with their one year old child who is walking. This program is designed to be a one-on-one program with an adult. Online registration will start on January 12th. Please register for only one storytime group and library location per child. A library card is required to register.

NEW!!
When placing holds on TV series, or other multi-DVD sets when they are “on order”, any hold placed will automatically go on disc 1 of the set.

Once the individual discs are listed in the catalogue, you can place holds on the other discs in the set as you are ready for them.

Accessing our new catalogue is easy.

Just click on the Catalogue button on our Home page. This will take you right to the Catalogue page.

One of the new features of our Catalogue is Catalogue Plus. Clicking on this tab when you search expands your search to include material from our Online Resources such as Databases. We hope this will make it easier for you to access this type of material to meet your information needs.

The Library is in the process of changing to a new Catalogue System.
* From now until our new system launches on December 9th, the library will not be placing any holds for material.
* From now through December 10th, due dates have been shifted. Any material that would normally be due from December 5th through December 10th will now be due on December 11th. 
* Renewals cannot be done through our online system. If you need to renew material for any reason before our new system is up and running, please ask staff for assistance.

Willy the wonder dog visited our Downtown location today for our Summer installment of "Paws 4 Stories".

Paws 4 Stories:

The Barrie Public Library is very pleased to partner with St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs to offer Paws for Stories. This St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Community Service was introduced to assist in helping to improve the reading skills of children by having a child read to a Therapy Dog.

What's your spark? Where's your inspiration? Find out this summer playing Readopoly, the Barrie Public Library's TD Summer Reading Club. Readopoly is our free summer reading activity played using a big board game. Every year we use the TD Summer Reading Program theme to make up a new board. The places on the board suggest what kinds of books to read or some fun things to do. All you have to do is have fun reading and then tell us about it. When you complete four turns playing on the board, you get a free book to keep!

The First Nation Communities Read has announced the title for the 2014-15 year, it is Wild Berries/Pakwa Che Menisu by Julie Flett. First Nation Communities Read is an annual reading program launched in 2003 by the First Nations public library community in Ontario.

The Poetry institute of Canada has a Poetry Contest and a Creative Writing Contest closing July 31, 2014.

Poems must be original and 24 lines or less.  Creative Writing must be original and 850 words or less.

There are categories for children, teens, and adults.  Prizes will be awarded.

The Canadian Science Writers’ Association (CSWA) offers two annual book awards to honour outstanding contributions to science writing 1) intended for and available to children/middle grades ages 8-12 years, and 2) intended for and available to the general public. Entries, in either French or English were published in Canada during the 2013 calendar year. The winners of this year’s award will be announced in mid-April and the award will be presented during the CSWA awards banquet at the annual conference in Toronto on June 7th.

Congratulations to St. Catherine of Siena's Battle of the Books team, gold medal winners for the third year in a row!

We had a great night at City Hall on Thursday, May 2.  Six school teams came out to battle their book knowledge in the nineteenth annual Battle of the Books Grand Battle.  St. Monica's came in a close second, with the Homeschool Team winning the bronze.

We hope to see everyone again next year for our twentieth Battle of the Books!!

After 2 days of "Battle of the books",  the six teams who will be battling for the trophy are:

  • St. Monica’s
  • Trillium Woods
  • W.C. Little

The Grand Battle takes place on Thursday May 2nd at 7:00 p.m., City Hall, Council Chambers.
